Located in the
Haliburton Forest Sculpture Trail
Don's second in a series of metamorphic benches was completed at the end of July. Made from Haliburton Highlands granite and painted steel, it stands out amongst the lush greenery and
offers visitors to the trail an unusual place to rest and reflect.
"Stay Sail"

Don Ian Dickson
Located in the Finger Lakes district of upstate New York on the west shore of Cayuga Lake
Frontenac Point Vineyard and Winery
is the permanent home for Don's latest kinetic sound sculpture. In July, 2005, "Stay Sail" was installed on the bow of the winery deck overlooking the lake and the vineyards and is the focal point for visitors from all over the world.
"Time Out"
Granite and Steel
Don Ian Dickson
Don’s participation in June at the
International Stone Sculpture Symposium “Ventspils 2005”
proved to be a winner as he received first place in the juried competition. “Time Out” is one of a series of metamorphic benches which combine carved stone and metal. This work is made from Latvian granite and painted steel. Hailed by the judges as creative and functional, “Time Out’s” success can be measured by the numerous members of the public who took a moment to rest comfortably on it.
"Elemental Balance"
Marble
Don Ian Dickson
Created at the
EMAAR International Art Symposium
on-site in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, January 12 - February 7 2005.
This work is based on the four creative energies of the universe: Earth, Water, Air, Fire and the balance between them. Each of these elements are necessary for human life, they each have both positive and negative aspects. The Earth without Water to moisten it, without Fire to warm it, and without Air to surround it, would be a lifeless planet. The elements work in harmony, even though at times their contrary aspects may seem in conflict with each other, to create and to sustain life.
"Cachet"
Don Ian Dickson and Amy Doolittle
Created for the
ONXY Bar, Park Hyatt Zürich,
“Cachet” is a sound sculpture featuring an elegant rising spiral.
"By Definition"
Don Ian Dickson and Amy Doolittle
Located at the
Science and Engineering
Building at University of North Florida
in Jacksonville, "By Definition" was installed in April, 2004. Chosen
as one of four finalists from 80 applicants, the team presented
their concept in mid-May of 2003. The winning concept is a
21 foot tall triangular column incorporating abstracted formulas,
symbols and organic elements from the chemistry and physics disciplines
combined with engineering components such as electrical schematics,
pulleys, stress failures, roads and bridges. Inlaid into concrete are names of
scientists and engineers as well as a separate, raised definition of engineering.
"Dancing Embers"
Stainless Steel and Copper
Don Ian Dickson
Created at the
EMAAR International Art Symposium
on-site in Dubai, United Arab
Emirates, March 9 - 23, 2004.
This piece was inspired by a concept of a desert traveler’s fire, the night breeze stirring the glowing embers
into the air making them dance, and music carried on the wind.
"Sound Vessel: Forest"
Don Ian Dickson and Amy Doolittle
Installed in August,2003 "Sound Vessel: Forest" was
added to the existing trail in the
Haliburton Sculpture Forest.
Created from cor-ten steel panels
patterned with trees and leaves, the vessel contains a sound
component. Trees, solid yet pliant are part of our horizons
and landscapes. Like a tree that is still, yet filled with life,
the vessel holds sounds and like a tree, is animated and given
voice by the wind.
"Tranquil Rejuvenation"
Don Ian Dickson
Installed in July 2003, "Tranquil Rejuvenation is located in the
Richard & Annette Bloch Cancer Survivor Garden
in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Columbia garden is one of several located across the United States spearheaded
and generously supported by the Bloch Family. Says Doolittle, "the
soothing meditative musical tones produced by the sculpture are very
appropriate for this place of healing".
"Syrinx's Harp"
Commissioned by City of Brampton
Don Ian Dickson
"Narrow Passage, Ageless Song"
Commissioned by Town of Osoyoos
as part of the
Okanagan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium
Don Ian Dickson and Amy Doolittle
"Narrow Passage, Ageless Song" was created by Don Ian Dickson and Amy Doolittle
and was influenced by the geography and history of
Osoyoos,
British Columbia.
The sound sculpture's overall shape resembles
the nearby mountains, the stainless steel uprights capture the essence of
Osoyoos which means the narrowing of the lake, the adjoining pieces
are distant mountain silhouettes and bridge the two sides of the narrows
together while the annual lunar cycle of 13
moons around the base incorporates Osoyoos Indian Band text for their seasons.
